Beneficiaries 2020/21

Our target beneficiaries are locally based charities which support disadvantaged and underprivileged children and young people living in Calderdale and the immediately surrounding areas. The charities supported by the online jigsaw shop to date are:

St. Martin’s Church, Brighouse £2,000  www.stmartinsbrighouse.org.uk
St. Martin's is the home base for our activities where jigsaws are received, catalogued, stored and selected for shipment. It holds the HMRC Charity reference X51309 under which Gift Aid is claimed.

Together for Looked-After Children, Brighouse  £3,750  https://tlccharity.co.uk
"Donations support the Letterbox scheme wich provides books and learning packages for Looked-After Children of primary school age and Catch-Up Tuition for Looked-After Children at primary and secondary school"

Yorkshire Children’s Trust, Halifax  £3,750  https://yctrust.uk
“The charity helps children and their families cope with the emotional and financial strain of life-changing illnesses”.

Turning Point Counselling Service, Brighouse  £3,750  http://www.turningpoint-brighouse.org.uk
We are placing a counsellor in Rastrick High School every Friday for the foreseeable future to support students moving into GCSE’s who are suffering from the stress of having missed over a year of in-school teaching.”

Calderdale Lighthouse, Halifax  £1,250  https://calderdalelighthouse.com
"We supply vulnerable and disadvantaged families throughout our community with quality baby equipment and essential items, clothing and shoes for new-borns to teens, bedding, toiletries, toys and books. Our service is free to use and is accessed by third party referral from professional practitioners and agencies, ensuring that items go to the families most in need.”

The work of St. Martin’s Mission to Children in the Community  has been restricted since March 2020 as all its activities  involve groups of children in indoor settings, so we have made the following exceptional donations:

St. Andrew’s Infant School, Brighouse  £500
“The Infants have a reading scheme targeted at Pupil Premium children and lower achievers. The scheme is based on using a ‘favourite book’ that is read over and over again. The plan is to extend this by giving the children a copy of the book to take home and keep once they’ve become proficient with it. The donation from jigsaws@brighouse will be used to establish an initial library.”

St. Andrew’s Junior School, Brighouse   £500
“Year 6 children are offered a residential trip that all are encouraged to attend. Some 45% (26 out of 58) of the eligible children are considered most vulnerable and attract Pupil Premium. The donation from jigsaws@brighouse  will be used to reduce the cost for the most vulnerable children to ensure that they are able to make the trip.”

We have also made an exceptional “out of area” donation to the

ACT Mara Safe House in Tanzania  (St. Martin’s is linked with Bugwema Parish in Mara)  £500
The practice of FGM is still carried out in Tanzania, despite being illegal in that country since 2009. In a few tribal cultures this act is seen as ‘purification’ before marriage which may lead to a larger wedding dowry. The Safe House provides food, shelter and a home, access to education and family reconciliation work for the girls in care and raised awareness of FGM in the communities which it serves.

Total distribution £16,000.
